From anywhere in the EU, to Lisbon.
I work with teams across the European Union from Lisbon. This is what a contract with a Portugal-based engineer looks like in practice: hours, invoicing and language.
Time zones
Lisbon runs on Western European Time, the same as Dublin and one hour behind Berlin, Amsterdam, Paris and Madrid. The working day overlaps with every EU capital.
| Where your team is | Lisbon's time |
|---|---|
| Ireland | The same time |
| Germany, the Netherlands, France, Spain, Belgium, Italy, Austria, Poland, Denmark, Sweden | One hour behind |
| Finland, Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania, Greece, Romania, Bulgaria | Two hours behind |
Invoicing
I invoice as a sole trader registered in Portugal (trabalhador independente). For a company in another EU country the invoice carries no Portuguese VAT: the EU reverse charge applies, and your company accounts for the VAT in its own country. I need your company's EU VAT number for it.
Language
I work in English with every team, and in Portuguese with Portuguese ones. Native Portuguese, full professional English.
Where the work happens
Remotely, on European hours. When a role or a project needs people in the room, that happens in Lisbon.
How it starts
You write to me, I reply within 2 business days, and we agree the scope, the rate and the terms in writing before the work starts.
Questions, answered
Do I need a Portuguese company to hire you?
Not for a contract. I invoice your company directly, wherever in the EU it's registered.
Can I hire you full-time from a company outside Portugal?
Yes. The usual routes are your own entity in Portugal or an employer of record. We settle which one in the first conversation.
Which hours do you keep?
European working hours. Roles that need US-only hours aren't a fit for me.
Tell me what you're building.
One message is enough to start. I read every one myself and reply within 2 business days.
